About the Clinical Microbiologist Role

Hiring Clinical Microbiologists in Chennai hospitals and diagnostic labs to perform microbiology tests on clinical samples, identify infectious agents and support clinicians in diagnosis and treatment.

The role includes supervising microbiology laboratory work, validating reports, guiding technicians and contributing to infection control and antimicrobial stewardship programmes of the hospital.

Key Responsibilities

  • Microbiology Testing

    Oversee culture, sensitivity and other microbiology tests on blood, urine, sputum, pus and other clinical samples, ensure correct processing and interpret results for bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections.

  • Result Interpretation & Reporting

    Validate reports generated by lab team, interpret antibiograms, highlight unusual resistance patterns and communicate critical results to treating physicians on priority for timely patient management.

  • Quality & Lab Management

    Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures, internal and external quality control programmes, calibration of equipment and documentation required for lab accreditation and audits.

  • Infection Control & AMS Support

    Work with infection control and antimicrobial stewardship teams by providing data on hospital-acquired infections and resistance trends and participate in policy and guideline discussions when required.

  • Training & Supervision

    Guide microbiology technicians and junior staff in sample handling, test procedures and biosafety practices and support training of residents, nurses or students posted in the lab.

Candidate Requirements

  • Education

    MD Microbiology (preferred) or M.Sc Medical / Clinical Microbiology from recognised university; candidates with PhD or additional hospital microbiology training will have added advantage.

  • Experience

    1–8 years experience in clinical microbiology laboratory in multispeciality hospital or reputed diagnostic lab; senior roles may require higher experience with independent lab handling.

  • Skills

    Strong knowledge of microbiology techniques, ability to interpret culture and sensitivity reports, understanding of infection control practices and good communication with clinicians and lab staff.

  • Others

    Ready to work in rotational duties if required, follow biosafety and PPE protocols strictly and be based at hospital or lab locations in Chennai.
